Puffinus griseus
July 6 (cont.) - Pt. Pinos, Monterey Co., Calif.
the point, except for an occasional
one far out which was seen to circle
about. They seemed to be sticking
closer to water surface than on 4th.
Total number seen going by in the
20 min. was 3000+
July 7 - 6:45 - 7:15 P.M. - The sea is much
calmer than yesterday - and sheer.
waters far less numerous. Not over
200-300 seen passing by the point, and
many of them circled around & settled
briefly on the water well offshore
at places where Heermanns Gulls were
also plunging to the surface. When
gone on around the "point" they
flew at greater average distance from
shore than yesterday. With the calm
sea, little mind they had to flap
almost constantly: series of 8-12+
flaps following one another with
only very brief glides between them
—the glides lasting less than 1/3 the
time that the flap series did.
July 10 - 7:05-7:15 P.M. - Thin misty fog. Sea nearly
as smooth as on 7th, but wind a bit stronger.
Total of about 7 shearwaters seen; the 2 which
came close enough for identification were
this species. Flight of all was very close
to surface, with periods of flapping & sailing
nearly equal in length. All going SW past point.
July 14 - Ocean W. of mouth of Elkhorn Slough, Monterey Co., Cal.
numbers travelling Northward well beyond breakers.
