Gray Lodge Refuge, 60-65' alt. S.W. Butte Co., Calif.
Dr. Leopold leading, around a loop to near the
center of the refuge and return - seeing in
the field the results of the refuge management
program here in force. This includes a
heavy predator trapping program just be-
fore the nesting season. We saw scats which
were attributed to Gray Foxes. Muskrats are
becoming so numerous as to cause serious
damage to dikes & lower roadways; at
least 20-25 muskrat houses were seen
on our tour. Photos taken of burned & un-
burned cat-tail areas to illustrate method
of opening up growth to accommodate
ducks on increased open water in winter.
Birds seen listed subsequently here.
10:15 - 11:45 AM. - We engaged in a
pleasant drive thru the weedy fields
just E. of refuge headquarters to tally
any of the 99 # tagged & released here
a few days ago. We must have flushed
somewhere in the neighborhood of 250-300
pheasants, among which I saw 4 tagged
ones; others were seen that I know of.
I found one dead tagged bird on early AM.
joint. Birds seen here are tallied on following list.
Jack Rabbits were commoner than pheasants
it seemed!
