Geocoryx Californianus
Dec. 19 about 5 mi NE King City Monterey Co., Calif.
As we drove down thru the foothills along the San Benito - King City road a roadrunner trotted across the road in front of us, as the car bore down upon it, the bird spread its wings, s, still running, took to the air, flapped about three times and gained sufficient alti- tude to clear a 1½ ft. embank- ment along the road, beyond which it sailed downhill out of our sight. This bird demon- strated that it could use flapping flight to gain at least a little altitude when once under way in the air.
