Logswell 1949 Mergus serrator Jan. 30 - Bolinas Lagoon, Marin Co., Calif. - 2 males in full plumage, with iridescent black parts of plumage, pure white, & with deep reddish brown on breast & with long, loose crest feathers. One of them was standing on shore at high tide level, and waddled about 15 feet to the water, when not approached to within about 200 feet of it across a deep tide channel. I have seldom seen 3s of this sp. in such beautiful plumage as there. Apr. 23 - [illegible] Bay Farm Island, Alameda Co., Calif. - about 25 on the "mud flats", swimming and diving occasionally in the water over the flats at early off tides about 9 A.M. There were at least 8 pairs, with 2 or 4 swimming close together, others seen were 4 by themselves or in loose association with the pairs. Low, hoarse "quack" notes were given by some of group of 4 pairs which flew out into bay proper.
