Cogswell 1948 Sphyrapicus varius Nov. 7 2 mi. WSW of Palo Alto, San Mateo Co., Calif. I came flying overhead from more densely treed slope south of San Francisquito Creek into scattered large oaks just N. of the creek. I followed it up and saw it fly twice, noting red head & upper breast and large white wing patch. One of Quercus agrifolia trees from which it flew had at least 50 rings of old borings on it.
