Cogswell 1949 Journal 22, Mar. 19 alt. 60-65' Bray Lodge Refuge, southwestern Butte Co., Calif. Came here with Dr. Leopold's class in Game management, driving via Vallejo, Fairfield, cut-off road to W., N. of Woodland, via Butter Causeway (route 24) to Yuba City, O to Bradley, than W., S., & W. again to the refuge headquarters, arriving about 5:10 P.M. The week's rain just past has left everything soaked, with standing water on all low fields. The roads within the refuge are so muddy in spots we can't drive in; but we spent about 1 ½ hrs. (until dark) walking around 1 of the close-in loops. Items of special interest were: 2 Charadrius obsiferus NESTS, & 15 Branta canadensis ssp? (probably mining), 1 Chen hyperborea (cripple?), bats of Lepus californicus & Rhascinus colubris. Full list of species will be made tomorrow. Phenological notes: Everything much greener than 6 wks. ago. New shoots of Typha are about 8" high on average. Road- side roads now green. No leaves on trees willow hereabouts, altho aesculus & Salix were coming into leaf on hills E. of Vallejo. Mar. 20. From 6 AM to about 7 AM I walked S. from headquarters along diiked road > across weedy flats (partly flooded) to the road along S. boundary of refuge & return. From about 8 to 10:15 A.M. we went as a class, with refuge manager John Cowan &
