1949 Fulmarus glacialis Feb 13 - Point Reyes, Marin Co., Calif. - From the old lighthouse position at the "point of the point" we saw at least 10 flying to and from beyond the breakers. The closest they came to shore was a good 800 ft. or more out & the 1 or 2 that did that didn't stay long. Ratio of dark phase to light phase birds was about 2 : 1. Robt. Stores - I had some discussion re whether Fulmar's or Sooty Shearwater's wing beats are more rapid, it seems to me that the fulmar gives a shallower stroke, perhaps also a little more rapid. We hope to have opportunity for direct comparison someday. July 20 - Monterey Bay (offshore from Cannery Row), Monterey Co., Calif. July 60-75 fulmars, in groups of 1 to 5, sitting on the water or flying short distances. Most of them are in a peculiar light brown blotchy plumage, apparently brought about by wear for they all had noticeably frayed tips on primaries & rectrices. A few light phase birds seen & those were also worn & consequently very white in appearance. I suspect these birds are all hold-overs from last winter's population. A few typical appearing dark phase birds also seen.
