Cogswell 1948 Aquila chrysaetos Oct. 24 - San Pablo Reservoir, Contra Costa Co., Calif. an immature with broad white base of tail was first noticed over hills NE of lake (NW end) when it soared up sharply to avoid a red-tailed hawk which had swooped down toward it. The eagle was in sight for at least 15 minutes. See acct. of conflict under Buteo jamaicensis. Dec. 29 - 3 ½ mi. N, 2 mi. E of Santa Ynez Peak, in Santa Ynez Valley, Santa Barbara Co., Calif. a pair were soaring low over the river valley. Here, seemingly hunting along the bed or adjacent riparian growth. 1949 Feb. 5 - Mt. Diablo, Contra Costa Co., Calif. - 2 were soaring in small diameter, upward spirals almost over the peak (snow covered). They were veering occasionally as they came close to one another, as tho in preliminary courting actions (?). One was an immature with very prominent white wing patches a white base of tail; the other an adult with no apparent white apparent from 2 miles to the NE from where we were watching with binoculars. A 3rd bird, also an immature but less prominently marked, glided over us & on toward the peak (to join the other two ?).
