Dec.23 Glendora, Los Angeles Co., Calif.
There are quite a few Black walnuts (now
nearly leafless) in the small canyons here
—something I didn't know occurred in
the San Gabriels. A ♀ Mule Deer and
½ grown fawn started up the slope
across a small canyon from me, whereupon
a ♀ Dalmatian dog which had voluntarily
accompanied me up the trail from Suidow's
took out after them — down thru the
brush & up the other side. The deer
quickly went under the tallest bushes
available & I thought they were hiding,
but when the dog got there it did not
find them, so I think they must have
slipped quietly thru the bushes up to
the trail above & then ran away.
Dec.24— [spent at Santa Monica & Highland Park
with my wife's family].
Dec.25. Playa del Rey, Venice, Ocean Park, L.A.C., Calif.
morn.
Made the usual rounds of Ballona Creek
mouth & old channel to Ohio Oil Co. &
boating lagoon at entrance to Recreation
Sun Club, but did not go in latter because
of hunting season. Complete list of birds
seen is entered in my personal roll book; high-
lights were: 22 Surf. Birds, 25 Herring Gulls
3 Ruddy Turnstones & many Blacks on the jetties;
1♂ Redhead, 2♂ Greater Scaups with 200+ Lesser
on the tidal creek.
