Cogswell 1950 Journal 1 Jan. 22 Berkeley to Benicia, Suisun, Isleton, White's Slough (10 mi W, 1-3 mi. E Sodi), a return via Stockton and State Route 4. Started off at 10:15 a.m. on a casual tour of the delta region to see what waterfowl were there (cf. trip of Feb. 5, 1949). Fields are much more advanced this yr, most of them already plowed; a few coming up green with grain. No waterfowl seen on fields in Suisun area -- only in or over marshes. Few ducks in air, 1 flock of 4000+ Snow Geese near Cordelia, a few small flocks of dark geese (sp.?) NW of Bird's Landing. About Sacramento River at Isleton was running turbulent and muddy, but still well below flood stage. Only birds on it were gulls and a few coots. Along State Route 12 at a few miles E of Terminus we found about 600 whistling Swans (see sp. acit.), and upon driving south on Garden Road toward White's Slough -- a few more swans, some Canada Geese (large & medium) and a flock of 800 or more Sandhill Cranes (see sp.acit.). There were still relatively few ducks, but thousands of coots, >5+ Sallmills were seen at 1 cat-tail bordered pond.
