Cogswell 1950 Journal 8 Apr. 4 - 90 ft., 3 mi. SE Justice, Merced Co., Calif. - Detoured this p.m. here from town of Justice to look over the lands of Justice Land & Cattle Co. which the ornithology class visited on Dec. 10-11, 1949. All we could do this time was look from the public road running East past the gun club headquarters; but for compar- son with the list recorded in December, the following were seen here today: White Pelican - 4 Off. Crested Cormorant - 5fd., 1fm. Great Blue Heron - 1 Common Egret - 10+ Snowy Egret - 1 White Faced Glossy Ibis - 40+ Mallard - 300 est. Hooded - 2+fm Gull - very few Green-winged Teal - 150 est. Cinnamon Teal - 200 est. Shoveller - 10 Baldpate - 300 est. Ruddy Duck - 2? Red-tailed Hawk - 2 Swainson's Hawk - 1 (dark) Golden Eagle - 2 Marsh Hawk (near Tracy) - 2 Sparrow Hawk - 2 Black Vulture - 1 heard Am. Coot - 1500 est. Killdeer - 15 Black-bellied Plover - 30 Wilson's Snipe - 1 Hudsonian Godwin - 50 Willet - 1+ Greater Yellow-legs - 5+ (Long billed?) Dowitcher - 300 Am. Avocet - 30+ Black-necked Stilt - 6 Ring-billed Gull - 4 mourning Dove - several Red-shafted Flicker - " Western Kingbird - " Black Phoebe - " Barn Swallow - many Yellow-bellied Magpie - 15+ (in pasture bordered by poplars) (singing) Long-b. Marsh Wren - 10 Loggerhead Shrike - several W. Meadowlark - " Corn. Red-wing - many Bullock's Oriole - 2 heard singing. House Finch - several Am. Goldfinch " Apr. 4 along State Hwy 33 5 - Approx. 20 mi. N Coalinga, Fresno Co., Calif. - Drove after dark from Los BaƱos to here. This area is a very flat gentle slope with almost no vegetation.
