Nov 21. Lower Mahuke Ranch, 1650', 4 3/4 mi. S and 1+ mi.
W from Kelseyville, Lake Co., Calif.
09:10-10:20 - covered this area from Mahuke's
house to just NW of junction of Kelsey Creek and
Ridow Creek. Total distance about 1 mile in
a semi-circle. Included habitats: house +
farm buildings with vegetable garden now gone
to seed; chaparral (chiefly Cakestoma) hillsides;
small orchard; rocky roadsides; and scattered
valley oaks
black walnuts, willows, & digger pines in area
near creek. Lots of birds around here,
and all are quite tame. Junicles especially
noted as exceptionally easy to approach.
List of birds seen is tabulated below: -
- Upper Mahuke Ranch, 2100', and chaparral slopes
to SW of it, 2 mi. S. of above locality. We
reached this "Trails End" ranch by a tortuous
very narrow road, which shows on War Dept
topographic map (Kelseyville sheet). At one
point one wheel was driving over the edge!
11:00-13:30 - we hiked in the chaparral area SW of
buildings to top of 1st main ridge and back
via same route. Distance about 1 1/3 mi. each way.
Few birds seen. Listed with those seen from:
13:30-16:00 - we spent around clearing, along small
canyon stream, & farm buildings. Areas included
scattered digger pines, umbellularia californica,
Valley + Live (wislegii?) oaks, and some madrone.
