Cogswell
1948
Clanusc leucurus
Nov.21 - approx 2 mi. N Kelseyville, Lake Co., Calif.
I perched in top of small willow (?)
(in walnut)
in field among extensive pear orchards.
Bessie Cogswell first picked it out, and
both Richard Tuber & I looked it over
with 9x binoculars (from the car). We
were close enough to note gray mantle
and black shoulder patch.
(Nov.26) - I find no specific mention of
this species in Sac. Coast avifauna # 27 for
Lake Co, but northwesternmost limit as
far beyond here (in Humboldt Co.). We saw
a pair of kites near upper Lake on Dec 13,
1945 as well. They are probably regular
in Clear Lake valley.
Dec. 21 - along Gaspar Rd., 1 mi N. to 3 mi N.W. of Laguna Nigra,
Ventura Co., Calif. - 5 seen from road in
about 1 1/2 miles, including an obvious
pair. This area has had kites
steadily common for the last several
(4+) years at least.
-W. of Ramona Canyon, E base of Dume Mt., western
Los Angeles Co., Calif. - a pair hovering
over slopes (old marine terraces) just N. of
coast highway US-101 alternate. I also have
prior records here during last year or so.
1949
Jan.29 - 1 1/2 mi. E. of Alviso, Santa Clara Co., Calif. one
