Cogswell 1948 Dendrocoptus pubescens Dec.21 - State Elk Preserve, Trupman, Kern Co., Calif. The characteristic descending "whining" call of this species heard in willows along Canal just NE of Trupman. A light drum- ming also heard a few minutes later probably came from the same bird. This is rather early for drumming to begin - - the weather can hardly be called spring like either! 1949 Apr. 10 - Jawbone Ranger Sta. 3400' alt., just W. of Jawbone Creek, Tuolumne Co., Calif. A ? seen at close range, as it worked over a leafless black oak tree near the cabin. It called occasionally, but during a 10-15 min. period gave no evidence of nesting. Compared to southern California impression, this is pretty high, both in altitude & in habitat (border of yellow pine forest) for this species.
