Cogswell 1948 Journal 31 Dec.20 (p.4): at the latter locality (21 mi. S.) the flock was mixed with Horned Larks. Here also a side road leads off the paved road to the east to join a service road along a hi. Tension power line which more or less parallels the highway. Since there was a large flock of ravens on the ground near the power line we drove over to count them & investigate. --- also to look for cranes on the low flat we could just see in the distance. The flock of ravens, estimated at 80, struggled up to perch on the power lines and a few to heelble a pair of golden eagles [see page] perched a few towers away. --- No cranes. The only other bird seen near here was 1 Say's Phoebe. Dec.21- State Elk Preserve vicinity, Tugman, Kern Co., Calif. We left Taft at 8:10 this AM & came here after stopping along Kern Canal & River at NW.end of Buena Vista Lake Bed: The canal has stagnant water all along it (with a few song sparrows, etc., in brush nearby); the river is absolutely dry, and Buena Vista Lake nearly so despite recent rains in the state (but I don't know about here).
