Oct. 16 - Napa Valley, from Vallejo to Calistoga, Napa Co., Calif.
12:00 - 14:00 — with my family (wife, Bessie, & son, Denis)
I drove along hi-way # 29, stopping only to observe
birds of interest. Entries made in species accounts
for:
Butes jamaicensis
Buteo swainsonii
Asyrdescmus lawisi
Corvus brachyrhynchos
Molothrus ater
complete list of
species seen entered
in roll book.
Bitter Creek road, between Calistoga, Napa Co., and Santa
Rosa, Sonoma Co., Calif. 14:00 - 15:00 Nice hill country through
each, with a trickle of water yet in some of
the stream beds. Open grassland + scattered oaks
merging into dense oak-laurel in canyons
and replaced (some places abruptly) by chaparral
on higher slopes and peaks. No birds of particular
interest, although at one point along Bitter Creek
I thought I heard an Evening Grosbeak (!!)
along Highway US-101, Santa Rosa, Sonoma Co., Calif. to San Rafael
Marin Co., Calif. 15:00 - 16:00 Simply drove most of way here.
one interesting flock of Corvus brachyrhynchos
(which see).
Oct. 24 - Diablo Valley, from Diablo to approximately 4 mi. SE
thereof; Contra Costa Co., Calif.
Leaving Diablo about 2:20 P.M. we (Bessie, Denis, I)
drove along paved road up the valley to junction
with cut-off going to San Pablo Valley NW of the reservoir.
