Cogswell 1949 Journal 6 Feb 5 - along State Hi way # 4 on Victoria Id, & along Trappers slough & Bonker Lake Tract, W & WSW of Stockton San Joaquin Co., Calif. altho we didnt see any 1600 whistling Swans (as reported from this area by Mrs. [illegible]) we did see a number [see sp. account], one flock of 12 Canada Geese[...]", [...], & numbers of ducks. all the waterfowl seem to be feeding in open fields -- swans included. - Enroute from Stockton to Thornton, north- westerly San Joaquin Co. Calif. The only note- worthy birds along this flat, open valley land were a group of 5 Red-backed Sandpipers with 3 Dowitchers in a small roadside pool some 5-6 mi. SE of Thornton. - W. of Thornton, northwestern San Joaquin Co., Calif. - more whistling Swans [see sp. acc't] in open fields, and in a plowed field at N. end of Staten Id. (near fork in Mokelumne River) was the largest concentration of waterfowl seen all day: 25,000 + Pintails 120 + - Swans 50 + - white fronted Geese 1+ - mallard (
