Suffenus creatopus
July 20 - ocean, 4-8 mi. W. of Pt. Pinos, Monterey Co.,
slightly S.
Calf.: About 8 shearwaters of this
species seen, well distributed over this
stretch of water which we covered
between 2:00 and 3:30 p.m. They were
seen singly, except for 2... One came
flying
on the water.
within about 50 feet of the stern of
the boat but did not stop. It af-
forded us a good view of its pink feet
at this range. Best distinguishing
features at somewhat greater range
are the white underparts, with dusky
under-tail coverts and irregular gray
on white under wing surface (especially
noticable on axillaries). The slow
wing beat - usually not so swift
a flight as compared with Suffenus
griseus is very prominent - a good
identifying mark at any range where
the light underparts can be seen.
[On our return, somewhere in
this same area, saidlaw Williams saw
3 of this species flying together].
July 26 - N. side of Pt. Pinos, Monterey Co., Calif.
one of the few shearwaters which was
out of the main line of flight - closer
to shore [see R. griseus] was this species,
