Dipilo fuscus
Oct 15 - West Gate 'circle', Univer of Calif, Berkeley, Calif.
11:35 - 11:50 A.M. - one watched as it foraged
on lawn between sidewalk and curb along which
autos were parked with shadows created
over about 1/6 to 1/8 of the lawn strip. The
Towhee foraged exclusively by scratching and
inspection of the grass and debris thus scattered
and also exclusively in the shade of the
parked cars. It was frightened twice by
approaching pedestrians and each time flew
or ran quickly across an intervening sunny
portion of lawn to more shade. It once crossed
such a sunny area without being alarmed.
It paid no attention to heads of dandelion
(Taraxacum sp.) seeds within a foot of its head.
Dec 24 - 1236-6th St, Santa Monica, Los Angeles Co. Calif.
I heard giving full song:
o o o oooooooo
repeatedly at dawn.

Apr 10 - near Sawbone Ranger Station, Sawbone Creek, 3400' alt. Tuolumne Co. Calif. 2 pairs were found here - both
birds of each pair staying close to each other in their
movements to scold me (when I squeaked) and in
foraging. Both pairs were in tall dense
ceanothus cuneatus
shrub areas at the border of open yellow pine forest.
