Cogswell 1948 Aechmophorus occidentalis ! Nov. 5 - near (chiefly N. of) E. end of Oakland Bay Bridge, Alameda Co., Calif. 14:00-15:00 - an estimated 100 or so scattered in area n. to Berkeley Pier and a few near end of old Key System mole. Although the eared grebes flew at approach of our boat, all westerns which we came close to simply dove and came up behind us or off to one side. Dec. 18 - Tomales Bay, Marin Co., Calif. - the high-pitched "whistled squeak" call: "k-n-r-e-e-e-k" (very brief) was a common sound over quiet water of the bay (later:) altho I had forgotten this call I find, on checking my old records, I described it (Jan. 19, 1947) as "a dry 'brick'." 1949 May 21 Año Nuevo Pt., San Mateo Co., Calif. - a rather close flock of about 40 were on the ocean just beyond scattered kelp beds in a slight cove south of the point.
