Cogswell 1948 Journal 28 Dec. 20 - Milroy, Santa Clara Co., along state highway # 33 ♼, and over Pacheco Pass. In this area we stopped only to look at such birds as were interesting right along the roadsides. Chief item of note: 1 Buteo regalis (immature) on a near plowed field with several ground squirrels scurrying over the bare earth nearby. This at large ranch at base of first hills E Milroy. The hills here are covered with scattered Q. lobata & Q. douglasii (?) near the base and in the higher "flats" near the pass, with a smattering of very short chaparral along the steeper slopes, at least to the west, and open grassland elsewhere. There are large sycamores in the canyons & washes. - Los Baños area, Merced Co., Calif. We stopped the car, got out for 10 minutes at a bridge over creek about 1½ mi. w of town. Although the creek beds coming down from the hills around Pacheco Pass were absolutely dry, this one is running fairly full of slightly muddy water (among the tall dry weeds of the summer's period). 2 coots scuttled away thru the weeds. at about 3 mi.
