Cogswell 1948 Melanitta fusca Nov. 5 - N. of E end of Oakland Bay Bridge, Alameda Co., Calif. 14:00-15:00 - at least 5 seen among large flocks of scups & surf scoters. all were in brown plumage; but seen well in flight with white patches showing. Dec. 18 Tomales Bay, Marin Co., Calif. - Very few compared to the masses of M. perspicillata, [illegible] soon after our departure from near Fog Rd., a small flock of 6± & this was about the situation on several occasions between there & the mouth of the bay. altho they are decidedly larger than the surf scoter, no noticeable difference in sound produced by their wings was apparent.
