Phalaropus fulicarius
Cogswell
1949
May 21 - Dumbarton Bridge, Alameda Co., Calif.
a flock of 21 were on the salt pond
just N. of the road and closest to the
open bay at about 10:15 a.m. They
were feeding by jabs here & there at
the surface - without whirling.
The whole flock flew a short distance
& re-commenced feeding meanwhile
swimming rapidly back toward their
original position. At this time I
had the closest view of them:
- about 1/2 had the whole back smooth
gull gray" The other 1/2 had some of
it smooth gray & some (especially
nearest the bend of the wing & on the
scapulars) dusky.
- hind-neck was narrowly blackish
(much darker than Peterso's plate indicates)
- top of head Dusky to blackish thru eye
- forehead white
- bill shorter & stouter than "needle-like"
but no yellow base noted.
