Cogswell 1950 Journal 15 Apr. 16 (cont.) Monterey to 8 mi. WSW Pt. Pinos Pink-footed Shearwater - 1 [crossed out: large] light bellicd shearwater seen at a distance appeared rather large - but not definitely identified. Fulmar - 40 est., most common in same belt as the Sooty Shearwaters, 3-5 mi. out. Brown Pelican - several in bay & harbor Brandt's Cormorant - many in bay, rapidly be- coming fewer offshore, the last seen at less than 5 mi. off Pt. Pinos. Pelagic Cormorant - several in, near bay. White-winged Scoter - 1 flock of 50+ (all this sp.) flew northward over ocean outside of bay. Surf Scoter - 500 est., in variously sized flocks, most of them flying northward. Ringed Plover - 1 in flock of Least Sandpipers a few mi. offshore, flying northward. Long-billed Curlew - 2 seen flying past boat well offshore by Mr. Jewett. Least Sandpiper - 100+ in several small flocks, flying northward low over ocean; a few Westerns may have been among them. Dowitcher sp. - 2 seen flying northward with flock of Surf Scoters outside bay. Phalarope sp. - about 5 seen (either Red or Northern, not in bright plumage for breeding & nests). Glaucous-winged Gull - 1 ad., 30+ imm. Western Gull - many; by far most numerous sp.
