Logswell 1949 Journal 40 May 8: Swades of Bass Lake, 3500' alt., Madera Co. Calif. (5) Centris familiaris - 2, singing Turdus migratorius - 3+ pairs [no songs] Vireo solitarius - 3 Vireo gilvus - 1 Venivora ruficapella - 5+ Dendroica occidentalis - 1?, singing, (a nodding Doffney owl) Wilsonia pusilla - 1? Molothrus ater - 1?, 17 Doringa ludoviciana. 1 heard (1 song) Hedyneles melanocephalus - 10+, most conspicuous singer. Carpodacus purpureus - 1 song heard. Bipilus manulatus - 1, singing regularly. Junco oreganus - 2+ , " Spizella passerina - 2, " Peromyscus maniculatus 2 caught in trap set by O.J. Brown. (125 traps set in various areas; both animals caught near rock outcrops close to stream). Mariposa Grove Big Trees, Yosemite Nat'l Park, alt. 6500', Calif. - we drove here, without stops, from Bass Lake, arriving about 11:00 AM. There is still snow in all protected sites under the trees -- up to 3-4' deep in some. Road apparently only recently opened. No herbaceous growth noted near the road, along which my observation was restricted, interrupted from time to time by driving the car + adjacent snowball fight by others of class.
