Megaceryle alcyon
Jan. 27: Atascadero L., 1 mi. S Atascadero, San Luis Obispo Co., Cal.
One was foraging over the lake here by the hover method, the water level being so low
that no trees or other perches were available above it. The bird hovered at an unusually
high position, about 80-100 ft. up, and re-
eated the 8-10 second hoverings at 7 or 8
different positions before returning to a perch
in an oak tree well up from shore. It
made no dives during this extended fo-
raging and was silent until it neared
its perch, when it gave a brief rattling
cry.
