Cogswell 1949 Buffinus griseus 7 July 26 N side of Pt Dinos Monterey Co Calif. When we arrived here at 6:15 P.M there was a steady stream of shearwaters (presumably mostly this species) passing S.W ward at about the line where the first line of whitecapped swells appeared at the mouth of the bay. Farther in the bay they would be seen streaming along from about the direction of middle of Fort Ord. Most are too far away for positive species identification but they all fly like this species & the occasional 1 or 2 which are out of line closer in are definitely so. The general flight is more narrowly restricted to a given line (not over 4 ½ birds wide) than observed by me on any previous date. Count from 6:25 to 6:25 P.M totalled 536 individuals about 10-12 average in the field of vision of my 9x binoculars at once. Another 5-minute count from 6:35 to 6:40 P.M ran to about 800 with some flocks going by so thick & fast I couldn't count every individual there were up to 30 or 35 in field of vision at some times. Judging that the average number per 5 minute period during our stay at the point was 600 (more from 6:30-6:50 less than 500 from 7:00-7:10) I estimate about 6,000 passed the point in the 55 min from 6:15 to 7:10 P.M.
