Phalacrocorax auritus
Oct. 9 - Municipal Fishing Pier, Berkeley, Calif.
10:00 + ½ hr. off - flock of approximately 250 fishing
en masse just offshore S. of pier, after
the manner described by Marshall.
Oct. 17 - Point Richmond, Contra Costa Co., Calif.
11:00 - 11:30 - While we watched to W. & S.W.
from small sandy beach opposite 100 block of
Western Drive at least 15 flocks of from 5
to 40 ± birds each passed to the southward.
Most of them flew very close to the surface
of the water but would occasionally rise
suddenly in stepwise fashion (i.e. leading
birds first, followed at some location by
others) to a height of 15 - 30 ft., only to drop
again. A few flocks flew steadily at a
50 to 100 feet height.
A single immature bird which was diving
about 300 ft. off the beach was watched
for several minutes. Its periods under
the water averaged about 25 seconds, above
water about 15 sec. or less.
Dec. 18 - Tomales Bay, Marin Co., Calif. - relatively
few of this species as compared with P.
penicillatus. A few flocks of up to 5 or so
of P. auristus were seen, as well as scattered
individuals which were mixed with flocks
of the other sp. The contrast between yellow
lower mandible of these, & dark of [illegible]
was very evident.
