Yolo Basin, Yolo Co., Calif. (contd) - the first
time I had ever seen it so. There were many
ducks but widely dispersed here and there
across the extensive lake so formed. Mallards
were common, Pintail & baldpats less so, and a few
Geese & Canvasbacks were seen; also 17 Golden
eye (with bright yellow-tipped bill) on the
turbulent water of the channel along the leese.
15 Whistling Swans were noted.
Of major ecological import was the con-
spicuous concentration of Jack Rabbits and
Ring-necked Pheasants on the few remaining
dry spots. July 25 jacks and over 15
cock pheasants were on one island not over
300 ft. long, a marsh Hawk was having
good hunting there also with frequent
rops to the ground - but neither of
the species mentioned were bothered by it.
Presumably there was a concentration of
more also. 3 Cooper's Hawks were seen
of a few Red Tails
in the thin stands of leafless willows along
the channel or flying out over the water
itself. Several Crows and many gulls
were also apparently participating in the
harvest. Land-birds noted along here were:
Red-shafted Slicker, Black Phoebe, Meadowlark, Red-wing
Brewer's Blackbird, House Finch, Dim Goldfinch (many),
Savannah, White-crowned, & Song Sparrows.
