Yavia immer
Dec. 18 - Tomales Bay, Marin Co., Calif. - close views
of at least 4 different birds of this species, one
in first winter plumage (i.e., light edgings to back
feathers) along the E shore of bay was so tame we
could walk up & down on shore only 200 ft. or
so from him without disturbing him.
The very large heavy bill of this species was
quite evident on this bird, and at least 2
other loons well out in bay at the same time
were distinctly larger than cormorants near
them [See Yavia stellata for general comments
re loon population here today].

Sep. 14 - Moss Beach to Pedro Pt., San Mateo Co., Calif.
at least 15 or 20 of the 25-30 loons seen
on the ocean along here today were of this
species, judging from comparative size and
the very heavy bills (a few still showed
traces of breeding plumage pattern on
the back). This seems an early date
for so many individuals.
Dec. 25 "Crystal Beach", Santa Monica - Ocean Park, L.A. Co.,
Calif. - 1 seen on ocean just offshore
Dec. 28 - Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo Co., Calif. - 4
seen in the bay near its mouth; 1 of them
(swung only suspect)
seen swimming under water near the sandy
shore just W of Morro Harbor. It was chasing
a fish which eventually eluded it despite twists
& turns by the loon in water so shallow its back was out.
