Cogswell 1949 Journal 42 May 8 - Coarse [illegible] to Raymond, Daulton, and Chowchilla, Madere Co., Calif. This route from typical upper Sonoran Blue oak-Digger pine woodland to broad stretches of grassland & eventually to cultio- vated valley is beautiful illustration of the foothills of the Sierras. In the wide grassland on low rolling hills S. of Raymond and on ? flatter plains nearing Daulton, the commonest bird along the roadside, was the horned lark, as noted from car with scattered meadowlarks, west. kingbirds, & shrikes also noted. Red-wings and cliff swallows were found along the larger swales in the flatter country (planted to grain) and house finches & English sparrows near ranches only. 2 Swainson's hawks were seen over low hills, and 2 over cultivated valley land, Sheggs Point May 21-22 Skyline Blvd, San Mateo Co., to La Honda, San Gregorio, Ano Nuevo Point, Scott Creek, & 2 1/2 mi. NE Bonny Doon, Helton, Mt. Herman, and Big Basin Park, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Followed this route yesterday (May 21), with stops for observation, chiefly of the vegetation, at most points listed. Birds observed then and this morning at Big Basin were tallied & will be incorporated in my notes for # Zoology 125. (June) - (see, Term Report # 2 for description of areas & birds, as listed in Table 9).
