May 8 - Coarse [illegible] to Raymond, Daulton, and Chowchilla,
Madere Co., Calif. This route from typical upper
Sonoran Blue oak-Digger pine woodland to broad
stretches of grassland & eventually to cultio-
vated valley is beautiful illustration of the
foothills of the Sierras. In the wide grassland
on low rolling hills S. of Raymond and on ?
flatter plains nearing Daulton, the commonest
bird along the roadside, was the horned lark,
as noted from car
with scattered meadowlarks, west. kingbirds,
& shrikes also noted. Red-wings and cliff
swallows were found along the larger swales
in the flatter country (planted to grain) and
house finches & English sparrows near ranches only.
2 Swainson's hawks were seen over low hills, and
2 over cultivated valley land,

May 21-22 Skyline Blvd, San Mateo Co., to La Honda, San
Gregorio, Ano Nuevo Point, Scott Creek, & 2 1/2
mi. NE Bonny Doon, Helton, Mt. Herman, and
Big Basin Park, Santa Cruz Co., Calif. Followed
this route yesterday (May 21), with stops for
observation, chiefly of the vegetation, at
most points listed. Birds observed then and
this morning at Big Basin were tallied
& will be incorporated in my notes for
# Zoology 125.
