Feb.5. (p.3) Jerry, Yolo Co., Calif. - no waterfowl
concentrations. The fields of Yolo Basin
are mostly freshly plowed - only a
few still with rice stubble above
ground. The only diving ducks
of the day were seen along here
- 12+ Lesser Scaup on the river near
Walnut Grove and 19 Canvasback on a
small drainage slough.
- 4 1/2 mi. E of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
another concentration of waterfowl in
a semi-flooded plowed field. What food
they get in these places I do not know,
but they grub along in the mud as
well as pick things up from the
surface - and get pretty dirty
in the process. This group contained:
Can. Canada Goose - 70+
Lesser " " . 8 + } see sp. account.
Mallard . 30+
Pintail . 3000 est.
Green-winged Teal . 100+
and a flock of 15 Snow Geese flew low
circled as though about to land, but
continued on to westward.
- along hi-way 24, Sutter Basin, Sutter Co., Calif.
Several more flocks of ducks, mostly pintails
+ a few mallards, in rice stubble and plowed
fields
