Puffinus griseus
July 20 (cont.) - Ocean from just N. Pt Pinos to about
9-10 mi. W. Pt Joe, Monterey, Calif.
further out the first few were seen
and at about 4-6 mi. w. of
the end of the peninsula we ran
thru quite a zone of shearwaters.
Nearly all were this species;
many very close views were
obtained (see also P. creatopus), now
settled behind the boat, however,
despite our tossing suet out for
them. They did make circles
turns around the boat seemed
to come much closer than most of
those we saw from Southern Calif.
boat trips in 1947-48. Beyond
the 4-6 mi. zone out to 9 or 10
mi. (as far as we went) there were
fewer fewer shearwaters. On
the return we again passed
thru a definite zone of them,
this time (about 4:15 P.M.) all of
them flying on to the Northward.
Total estimate of members seen:
500-1000 nowhere were they
as densely grouped as those noted
on July 4.
One individual was resting on
the water well within the Bay,
in company of 2 Fulmars on our
return at about 5:00 P.M.
