Cogswell 1949 Diomedea nigripes July 20 - ocean approx. 9 mi. W. Pt. Joe, Monterey Co., Calif. Two flying here; one came in cautiously by toward our boat, now hove to. the It swam up to us from a distance of about 300 ft. & circled around behind us to nibble at the trail of seed I put out. The other bird disappeared. [Depth here est. from chart? to be about 900 - 1100 fathoms]. -ocean, approx. 6 mi. W. Pt Joe Monterey Co. Clf. sighted a close-packed troupe of 12 albatrosses swimming along over 's the swells like so many seotors!! &, we circled them & spiraled in, scaring off 2. Finally had to run the boat straight at them to get them up, & even then several had difficulty getting off the water (one didn't). Several taxied up and down over 2 swells before getting airborne. All those stern in the air today did a great deal of flapping - there was a fair breeze to us, but appea[red] ently not enough for them. all albatrosses seen today were dark-rumped but in 10 out of the group of 12 here noted were 3 which also had dark heads. all the others had a great deal of white over the face, whereas these 3 had only a narrow line around the base of the bill.
