1948 Molothrus ater 1. Oct. 16 - 3 mi. S. of Napa, Napa Co., Calif. - alt. < 20'. at least 2 males, and 2 (slightly question-able) females were pulled out of a mass of blackbirds feeding around cattle corral along hi-way 29. Brown heads & short bills of ? seen clearly. They carried their tails at an angle considerably above the horizontal while feeding. Dec. 27 - Lawson Ave., 1 block E of Jefferson ave., S.W. slope of Baldwin Hills, Los Angeles, L.A. Co., Calif. at least 12 counted (about 50-50 ? to ?) amid flock of Brewer's Blackbirds at a feeding stable. Dec. 29 - 3½ mi E, 2 mi S. of Santa Ynez, Santa Barbara Co., Calif. - at least 1 ? seen in flock of Brewer's Blackbirds perched in leafless walnut tree at farm along edge of Santa Ynez valley. Dec. 30 - 2 mi. SSW of center of San Luis Obispo, S.L.O. Co., Calif. at least 2 ?s identified (as in all the above, by small size, brown head, conical bill, dark eye) from among Red-wings on wires by roadside SE of Laguna School. One of the birds gave, weakly, the "gluck-seeeee" song. 1949 Mar. 20 - Gray Lodge Refuge, S.W. Butte Co., Calif. - at least 3 were among the flocks of blackbirds flying eastward from marshes in early A.M. These were pulled out by high, glassy whistler - , 2 were seen well enough to see short bills & brown heads.
