Passerculus sandwichensis
Jan. 29. ½ mi. E (or ENE?) of Salviso, Santa Clara Co., Calif.
Far more common than the sharp-tails (one) here today; though they sit more in the open to look at you, they also fly much farther when finally disturbed. Some even traced ½ mile or so across the marsh to dikes at a distance from us. The savannahs varying from a very pale grayish brown with slight yellow or lead to rich brown & black, with heavy yellow wash both above & below cheek and with blackish breast streaks. Probably 15-25 birds seen in or near ½ mile ± of dike → ¼ mile ± of roadside.
