Lophortyx californica
Nov. 21 Lower Mahuke Ranch, 4 3/4 mi. S or 1 mi. W Kelseyville,
Lake Co. Calif.
2 large coveys, totalling
about 100 birds flushed from low chaparral
(cheifly adenosoma) on ridge behind house
& barn.
This was far more quiet then
were present at upper Ranch 5 miles
to the south.
The proximity to more
abundant grassland may be a factor.
Dec. 5 near Jewell Lake, Tiller Park, Contra Costa Co.,
NE of Berkeley, Calif.
One covey of 13
(by my count, tho other observers differed) fed
in open grassy & weedy areas along road
S.E. of pond despite our standing in plain
sight to watch them, perhaps 100 feet away
Dr. A. H. Miller remarked that quail seem
often to be thus less wild on rainy or
cloudy days than on clear days.
Perhaps
it is some sort of different response,
dependant upon whether their shadow
is evident to them or not; i.e., the
flight reaction would perhaps be set
off at a lower threshold if the shadow were
present.
Another covey of 17 also seen under young
eucalyptus along road near picnic tables.
