Cogswell 1949 Lophortyx california 2 May 7 - San Joaquin Experimental Range, alt. 1000', SSW of O'Neals Madera Co., Calif. The quail pairs are thicker here than any place I remember, although total population may not be above that in residential San Marino in 1943. At three places this morning I noted 2 pairs feeling amicably within 20 ft. of each other, or the 3rd of 1 pair simply watching without mak- ing any hostile move or giving any call. The hens here use boulders and fence posts as lookouts and are staying very close to the hen; as soon as she moves they fly or run close to her, either on another lookout or on the ground. An est. of 15 prs. was made for the area in small, flatish draw just S. of Headquarters and the 1st hill to South.
