1948 Cervus mandonis Dec. 21 - State Elk Preserve, Trupman, Kern Co., Calif. On the flats in SW corner of preserve between Town of Trupman and point where road to Buttonwillow crosses the canal, we counted about 30 bucks, all with antlers (2-7 prongs seen) and 17 does and 2 fawns about 1/3 to 1/2 grown. The bucks were scattered in small groups or singly in the area between willows along the canal & the high fence bounding the preserve. Some were lying down fairly close to the fence, but got up & walked slowly away when we got out of car & walked toward the fence. All seemed to be in good con- dition with fine coats & sedate carriage. The does were all (except 1) in one group which walked up out of a small arroyo & into the open grassland just about when we had decided there were very few, if any, does around. One of the fawns was with this group, the other following the single doe, which was with a small group of bucks at a different locale. How much personal care by the state these elk get I do not know, but they
