Cervus mandonis
Dec. 21 - State Elk Preserve, Trupman, Kern Co., Calif.
On the flats in SW corner of preserve between
Town of Trupman and point where road to
Buttonwillow crosses the canal, we counted
about 30 bucks, all with antlers (2-7
prongs seen) and 17 does and 2 fawns
about 1/3 to 1/2 grown. The bucks were
scattered in small groups or singly
in the area between willows along the
canal & the high fence bounding
the preserve. Some were lying down
fairly close to the fence, but got up
& walked slowly away when we got
out of car & walked toward the
fence. All seemed to be in good con-
dition with fine coats & sedate
carriage.
The does were all (except 1) in one group
which walked up out of a small arroyo
& into the open grassland just about
when we had decided there were very
few, if any, does around. One of the
fawns was with this group, the other
following the single doe, which was
with a small group of bucks at a
different locale.
How much personal care by the state
these elk get I do not know, but they
