Branta canadensis
Oct. 24 - San Pablo Reservoir, 300' ft. Contra Costa Co., Calif.
at least 8 large Canadas present with
mass of ducks in cove on N.E. shore of lake.
4 of them were walking slowly along the dry
grassy slope a few feet from the water's
edge and were once obviously upset when
chasing 2+ chattering other
canada geese, crashed thru among them.
The other 4+ were at rest on small point of land
about 20 ft. from end of cove. all this obser-
vation via 32x scope & 9x binoculars from
hi-way SW of lake.
Nov. 13 - 93 B. C. canadensis (other "large subspecies")?
and 4+ B.C. leucopareia seen from road along
SW shore of dam. many of them were on shore
just below the road until I walked into
sight, when they swam slowly out into
lake. some had been honking occasionally
but were entirely silent after they saw me.
1949.
Feb. 5 - 10 mi. W & 3 mi. S of Stockton, San Joaquin Co., Calif.
a flock of 12 large geese of this species (very
probably B.C. canadensis) flew over, but were silent.
- about 4 1/2 mi. E of Woodland, Yolo Co., Calif.
About 70 B.C. canadensis & at least 8 definitely
smaller ones, probably B.C. leucopareia in partially
flooded plowed field with a few thousand ducks,
chiefly Pintails. The geese were far more
wary than the ducks & flew up beyond a
