1948 Belecanus occidentalis Oct. 10 - San Pedro Point, San Mateo Co., Calif. An estimated 300 or more on outermost offshore pinnacle. This is a very steep sided pyramid; and since I could see only one face, there may have been many more. During the half hour or so (12:00-12:30) that we were on the mainland cliff opposite there were, of course, always some arriving and departing and a few soaring high overhead. Once, however, for unknown reasons a flock of 100 or so took off from the rocks & soared up around the mainland cliffs before resettling on their grounds splashed perch offshore. None were seen fishing. Princeton, San Mateo Co., Calif. only a few here. one fishing near piers. I found long dead on beach. 1949 July 4 - Elkhorn slough, Monterey Co. Calif. - 159, by actual count, resting on sand islands in N. arm (old outlet channel) between dunes and Highway # 1. July 17 - Pt. Lobos, Monterey Co., Calif. - an estimated 700 on bird islands off S. shore of peninsula, but with constant arrivals & departures. All were just settling or preening. Majority were ads; few full grown immes. Laflin Williams says only a few pairs breed here.
