Goldfinch 1 3 Green backed Goldfinch 5 Brown Towhee 1 11 Savannah Sparrow 70* 9+ (including at least: Belding's - 1 Large billed - 4+ White crowned Sparrow - 15 3 14 320+ Song Sparrow 4 12 Dec. 29 Laguna Niguel, Ventura Co., Calif. - While we were looking over the shorebirds, etc. from Highway US-101 here, the Goodyear blimp came flying over the area at a good 800 - 1000 feet altitude. The birds picked up en masse & flew around & around only settling down again after the blimp had passed. Pelicans, cormorants, great blue herons, shorebirds, gulls, & ducks were all in the flocks giving this response. A plane flying over at that altitude would not cause such a flight I am sure. However, on Dec. 28 (the I didn't write it up at the time), a similar flight including masses of ducks & geese occurred when a rocket was fired from the guided missile center here.
