Cathartes aura
Dec. 18.
Tornales Bay area, Marin Co., Calif.
at least 21 different individuals seen
(we counted progressively, from car, keeping
watch that those behind us didn't get recounted)
around 5, and 6 over hills NE of bay
with 2 of the total circling over Tornales
Point. This seems an unusually large
number for so far N. at this season.
Dec. 21 - Caspar Rd., 3/2 mi to 5+ mi. E & 1 1/2 mi. S. of Port
Hueneme, Ventura Co., Calif. - 10 or more seen,
some of them sitting about on low fence
posts or in trees. This is a normal
wintering area apparently, for I've seen
the species here on every winter visit
if I remember right - & that includes
one in Nov., & 2 or 3 in January of different
years.
Dec. 29
1 mi. S. Arroyo Grande, San Luis Obispo Co.
Calif. - 2 flew over farmland area at
low altitude.
Dec. 30 - Los Osos Valley, E of Morro Bay, San Luis Obispo
Co., Calif. - 4 seen
- Morro Bay, S.L.O. Co., Calif. - 5 seen, 2 of
them soaring over ocean beach & dunes, 2
of them down on ground along tide channel
in salicornia marsh.
The above records indicate widespread
wintering (or near-wintering) of this species coastally.
