Apr. 1 Life Sciences Bldg. to lower Strawberry Canyon (below Botanic Garden), return, U. of Calif. Berkeley, Alameda Co., Calif. went with Bruce Brown on walk from 10:30 - 12:00 for purpose of teaching him some birds, especially the voices thereof. New leaves are coming out on Quercus agrifolia trees defoliated by oak moths last year; Aesculus is well leaved out, even in the shade; Rhus diversiloba leaves opening up; Smil- axina is in bud. - all these along lower cyclo- tron Road. As to birds, the singing of about 5 each of Vermivora celata and Wilsonia pusilla was conspicuous on the N. facing slope. One carpenter Vireo gilvus, sveral Iarus inornatus, 10+ Carpodacus purpureus, 10+ Melospiza melodia, 3 Thryomanes benichi, 1 Qegulus calendula, and a few Chanaca fasciata were also heard singing in the canyon. A single Empidonax difficilis gave the usual "peet" from tall conifers NW of the stadium, another from wooded portion of creek in campus near Chem. Bldgs. Apr. 2 Mt. Diablo, Contra Costa Co., Calif - drove here via Danville, road over Black Hills with Ecologg class. We did chaparral plot work at altitude of about 2300', had amphispiza belli, all around us. Pacific Grove, Monterey Co., Calif. Insufficient time for detailed notes. Birds seen here listed in roll book. One Phalaropus fulicarius near Fort Ord in P.M. Apr. 3 - Asilomar
