Cogswell 1949 Journal 129 via U.S. 40 Dec. 4 - Berkeley, to Winters, Knights Landing, Butter Causeway, Yuba City, & Gridley, Butte. Lack of waterfowl on valley fields is in sharp contrast to conditions here last February. Many fields are plowed already; others (chiefly rice) are not. yet no ducks or geese were seen even in rice stubble except very close to the refuges N of Marysville. Battles: a few of birds seen enroute are tallied - in my personal roll book. - Gray Lodge State Game Refuge vicinity, S.W. Butte Co., Calif. Drove W. from Gridley about 9:25 a.m., caught up with caravan of 5 or 6 cars of Yuba Rite Audubon Society members who were here for a field trip also. Arrived at refuge headquarters about 9:45, and took a quick ride around 1/2 of inner loop road in back of pick-up driven by man working there. Then we walked around the whole inner loop with a straggling group of 15-25 people - not the best conditions for waterfowl observation, but many were observed at fairly close range, nevertheless. Total waterfowl numbers (see list below) seem far below last spring's population, altho the geese seem to be
