Dec.20 (p.2) angle of about 40° and runs SE along,
between extensive gem club grounds. We drove
down it for a mile or more and back, looking
for ducks & shorebirds, mostly from the car.
There is plenty of water here; but very
few ducks. I have a feeling the water
has only been here since the rains of a few
days ago, and the ducks do not yet find
abundant food in it. If this is not the
case, the duck population is way, way
down, judging from what I have heard
of "normal" conditions at Los Baños.
We also checked some other ponds further E
along route 33 (but W. of Dos Palos). Following
is an estimate of waterfowl numbers, by species,
which we saw in about 1 mile along the dirt
road & 3-4 miles along route 33:
White Pelican - 10 Badwall 20
Great Blue Heron 3 Shorelter 1000
Com. Egret 7 Black Sallinule 2
Snow Goose 1300 Am. loot 3500
(in 2 flocks on ground Kilddcer 2
about 5 mi. E. Los Baños)
Long-billed curlew 4
Mallard 1 Greater Yellow-leps 3
Cinnamon Teal 2+ Least Sandpiper 15
Green-winged Teal 100 Dowittler 80
Pintail 15 Shell (Cal. or Dwy. B.) 3+
