Amphispiza belli
Nov.21 - Ridge 5 of upper Mahube Ranch, 3 & mi. S.
& 1+ mi. W. Healeyville, Lake Co., Calif.. In
area of chaparral regrown to knee height
(after fire 3 yrs ago according to Mr. Mahube)
near grassy area on summit of ridge, I
was sure I heard the light "tick" call
note of this species -- at two different
times. But I couldn't get sight of the
bird.

Apr.2 - 1+ mi SSW Mt. Diablo Peak, 2300+, Contra Costa Co.
Calif. - While engaged in making a transect
thru breast high adenostoma- ceanothus chaparral
on NE facing slope, we were surrounded by
at least 3 birds of this species. Two were
singing with slightly less regular "suing" to
the songs than I have noted in southern California,
a third bird closely associated with one of the
singing ones right near us was probably the ? of
the pair in whose territory we were crashing thru
the brush. Dr. Ritelka says the species has been in
this spot for at least the last 5 years. The
shrub cover is now at about the same height &
density as on our Bouldress study area (1942)
near Pasadena -- from which they disappeared
upon further growth of shrubs & near closure
of the canopy in the next 4 years. Today one
called a harsh "zween" several times as well as
ordinary "tick" calls.
