Cogswell 1950 Journal 10 Apr. 5 (cont.) The LeConte's Thrasher alighted on a low bush top, whence I shot it. (my cat. # 136), 6 ½ mi. S., 5 mi. E of San Isidro. Apr 5 - From this locality, we drove via a winding levee road between Buena Vista Slough (inaccessible from levee if existent at all any more) and the low Buttonwillow Ridge to E. This diked-off basin is now completely cultivated, the narrow levee road affording good opportunity to note field birds in it. The road leads into a paved road 3 mi. W & 1 mi. N of Buttonwillow. From the latter town we angled S. & W. alternately, finally reaching Triyman (State Zoological Park - Elk Preserve) which, however, we did not cover other than by driving across the slough on the entrance bridge. We then continued on S past the E side of Buena Vista Lake (dry) & thru old Kern Lake Bed (now cultivated fields). Only casual observations made here & there as follows: Great Blue Heron - 3 along Buena Vista Slough near Triyman Am. Egret - 5+ ", " Snowy Egret - 1 " " Turkey Vulture - 2 Red-tailed Hawk - 5+ Swainson's Hawk - 10+ scattered thru Last Hills-Triyman & Buena Vista L. areas. Marsh Hawk - 5+ Sparrow Hawk - many Killdeer - " Mourning Dove - Roadrunner - 3 seen in desert-like shrub areas near Buena Vista Slough (Triyman) Western Kingbird - common, especially near the slough. Barn Swallow - small groups- locally near bridges. Raven - est. 70 between Coalinga & Bu. Vista Lake.
