Puffinus griseus
July 4 - Pt. Dinos, Monterey Co., Calif. The
shearwater flight offshore here this
evening was the best yet — insofar
as observation was concerned. Those
recorded in my journal on June 17
were most probably this species
as it has been common at the "mouth"
of Monterey Bay ever since, on
several dates we have watched them
from Cabrillo Pt. (Hopkins Marine Sta.)
Pt. Aulon (Tavern's Pt., foot of 17th St., Pacific
Grove) and from here. On June 25 one
came close enough to shore here where
I saw the pale gray wing-lining areas.
Largest numbers were estimated on June
26 at 300 off Pescadero Pt. in early
A.M., and I think fully as many
are here this P.M., many of them coming
close enough for specific identifica-
tification [see also P. opisthomelas & D.
bulleri].
They seem to be closest to
shore in early A.M. and just before
dark. At mid-day they are still
in sight, coursing up and down
about where the deep ocean swells
break up upon entering Monterey
Bay — but they are then too far
out for identification. Some days
they are not in sight at all from the
shore at mid-day. The movement,
if watched for only a short time
