1948 Melanitta perspicillata Oct. 10 Municipal Fishing Pier, Berkeley, Calif. 10:00 A.M. - flock of 9, including 2 adult 5's, flew S. overhead at about 100 ft. altitude. - 1 adult ? was on water S. of pier at same time. 10:22 - 6 in ? plumage flew N. over pier 10:42 - 287 g 244 flew W. out into bay. -San Pedro Point and Princeton, San Mateo Co., Calif. an estimated 50-60 in small flocks, most of them flying south parallel to shore. one flock at Princeton contained a fast-flying stocky duck not over 2/3 the size of the scoters. I could see no markings in its gray plumage (= ? bufflehead or ??) Nov. 5 - N. of E. end of Oakland Bay Bridge, Alameda Co., Calif. 14:00-15:00 - mixed in with the much larger masses of scamp were an estimated 300-400 scoters (up?). Almost all the scoters we saw in flight were of this species. The water was only very slightly choppy, wind very slight, and many scoters I were unable to get off the water. not over about 10-15 in full ? plumage seen. Dec. 18 - Tomales Bay, Marin Co., Calif. - Many loose aggregations of 50 to several hundred each + scattered ones were well distributed from near Hog Is. to mouth of bay. Few were seen on the ocean or around the point. (Tomales).
